SUMMARY:Roundtable Discussion with FCA on SME Research
DESCRIPTION:The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has asked Euro IRP for a roundtable discussion meeting on SME Research\, and is open and keen to hear the views from Euro IRP members. The meeting will be held on Monday\, 24 August starting at 2pm (London time)\, and should probably last for 60-90 minutes. It will\, of course\, be a virtual meeting – on Microsoft Teams. If you would like to join this meeting\, please let Sue Westwood and/or Steve know\, and we will provide the link to you. \nThis meeting has been initiated by the FCA\, and will be hosted and led by them.  Euro IRP had one of our regular discussions with the FCA a few weeks ago\, as part of our ongoing dialogue\, and it’s a clear sign of how much the FCA sees Euro IRP as the voice of independent research providers\, that they have now reached out again to us to directly collect views and feedback from Euro IRP member firms.  This invitation is open to all Euro IRP members\, but clearly as the outline agenda shows below\, the focus of the discussion is entirely on the question of SME research.  Euro IRP issued a Regulatory Update on 24 July outlining the European Commission’s proposals\, with a further update in our July Bulletin published on 31 July to all our members. \nEuro IRP will circulate a brief summary of the discussion after the meeting\, for those members interested\, who are unable to join on the day. \nThe agenda from the FCA is as follows – \n\nIntroductions\nFCA overview of policy thinking on possible options to encourage SME research\nDiscussion on Euro IRP and members’ views on the value of SME research\nPreliminary thoughts on the European Commission’s quick fix proposals for SME research\nAOB

SUMMARY:Exclusive Euro IRP Members Event - Advance Results of the 2020 Members' Study
DESCRIPTION:We were delighted to launch\, last month\, our Annual Members Survey\, now in its fourth year\, the primary aim of which is to capture valuable data about the independent research sector and our membership\, highlighting the key questions and issues faced in their businesses today\, to generate valuable trend data.  At this critical time for our industry\, with the backdrop of COVID and with Brexit on the horizon\, this year’s survey has never been more important to capture the sentiment of our members. \nWe are hosting this online event\, on Monday 27 July\, exclusively for our members with Steve Kelly\, who will be sharing the first insights into the report’s findings\, importantly before it’s publication in early August.  Sadly\, due to COVID-19 we are still unable to host meetings at The Brand Exchange\, but we are very much looking forward to welcoming our Members to an online presentation\, hosted via Zoom\, and will comprise of a presentation by Steve Kelly\, followed by a Q&A session regarding the survey’s outputs. \nWe have decided to host this event via a Zoom Call\, and not a Zoom Webinar\, to enable interaction between Steve Kelly and our members during the Q&A session.  Whilst we have been using Webinar platforms for more formal presentations\, we feel that this medium is more suited to external presenters with written Q&A with our members\, whilst a Zoom Call will allow a more personal Q&A when we are presenting to you all. \nMembers will still need to RSVP to this invitation to receive a link to join Zoom and password to join the presentation.  Once you have RSVP’d you will receive a confirmation of your place and 24 hours before the event you will be sent your login to join the call. \nAs in previous years we have asked Steve Kelly to prepare a full report\, with analysis of the survey findings\, a copy of which will be available in early August to all our Euro IRP Members.  The final published report is shared with the press\, media\, other financial institutions\, and importantly the regulators\, as they continue to put research pricing under close scrutiny in 2020.  The annual survey is not only an initiative to raise the profile of independent research\, but also a valuable tool to continue to collect evidence to support our genuine concerns on unfair competition\, and the aggressive practices of the investment banks.  Euro IRP remains the recognised voice of the independent research sector by the regulators\, and our Euro IRP Members Survey is quickly becoming established as a vital source of information\, especially in light of the regulators wanting more “real” data on the market. \nWe would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members who have taken part in our survey this year and supported us with this important initiative.   Without your support our annual Study is simply not possible.  Thank you.

SUMMARY:Unbundling Uncovered USA Conference 2020
DESCRIPTION:Due to the COVID-19 pandemic\, the Substantive Research Unbundling Uncovered conference\, due to have taken place in New York this month has had to be\, understandably\, postponed. \nWe understand that Mike Carrodus and his team hope to return to The Metropolitan Club on 5 October 2020\, and has kindly extended the offer of two complimentary passes to each Euro IRP member firm who would like to attend this New York conference in October.  Members can put this date in their diaries by way of a “save the date” and we will ensure that you are kept up to date on news from Substantive Research later in the year\, and how you can secure your tickets\, if the conference can take place. \nIn the meantime the Substantive Research have been adapting to a changing landscape and will be hosting their first virtual Substantive Research conference next Wednesday\, 24 June. \nAs Mike Carrodus advises … “There have already been dramatic changes in supply and demand in the last 3 years driven by regulatory and industry trends\, with asset managers globally having adopted rigorous and transparent research valuation and budgeting processes. This transformation has created challenges\, and both buyside and sellside are navigating a market that is in the process of clearing for price whilst simultaneously dealing with the fallout from COVID-19.  Discussion panels will cover global best practices in research management\, research valuation and budgeting\, providers’ business models and how they are adapting during the crisis\, and corporate access post-COVID-19.” \nAs many of our members are aware\, these conference\, both in London and New York\, attracted over 400 participants last year\, providing Euro IRP and its members an opportunity to attend a day of high quality debate and analysis.  We are very much looking forward to returning to Substantive Research’s conference in London on 10 November 2020\, but in the meantime our members can take this opportunity to register for free for next Wednesday’s online conference. \nTo find out more about next week’s conference\, including a full agenda\, with timings and discussion panel information\, go to https://unbundlinguncovered.vfairs.com/ \nMembers can registered free by clicking the REGISTER button at the top of the page and completing their personal details and choosing “IRP” from the Attendee Type drop down box.  Any members experiencing problems registering can write to Mike Carrodus at info@substantiveresearch.com

SUMMARY:Member Discussion Group - Getting back to the office post lockdown
DESCRIPTION:We know that many of our members have been faced with operational challenges managing their independent research businesses during the COVID lockdown. Traditional office based teams have adapted to remote working business models\, enabling them to continue publishing their insights and research to clients at a time when it is most needed. \nAs new cases of the virus are beginning to decline in many countries\, respective Governments are beginning to ease lockdown measures and transition to a “new normal”. \nThoughts are now turning to reopening offices and the measures needed to provide COVID-safe environments for staff. Many of our members are now grappling with such operational issues\, and whilst the situation in each member country will differ\, the challenges of when and how offices can open are the same. We believe there is strength in our collective experience and our aim is to bring members together to discuss these issues. \nWe would therefore like to host our first Euro IRP Discussion Group\, via Zoom\, on Wednesday 17 June\, at 3pm (BST). \nThe Discussion Group will be hosted by AlphaValue using Zoom and will be open to all members.  Tim Parker\, Euro IRP Executive Director\, will be chairing the meeting\, which has been specifically designed to allow members to discuss their approach to\, and decisions about\, reopening their offices. Whilst the conversation may focus on key themes such as employee engagement programmes\, communication strategies and risk management\, we are proposing to offer this meeting without a fixed agenda to promote open and collaborative discussion. \nTim Parker will open the Discussion Group by introducing three Euro IRP members: Julia Ashworth\, COO + CFO\, Arete from London; Pierre-Yves Gauthier\, Founding Partner\, AlphaValue from Paris; and Jason Glazer\, COO\, Cornerstone Macro from New York\, and will ask them to share their experiences\, thoughts and concerns about the challenges they are currently facing.  We hope this “Three Cities Viewpoint” will provide three unique insights into how individual members are approaching the challenges of post lockdown business life and help to open up the Discussion Group to the wider membership\, enabling us to discuss shared concerns and common themes.  We would stress that this is an open discussion session\, and not a Q&A meeting\, but if you have particular topics you would like to be discussed\, then please let us know ahead of the meeting.

Our attendance at this\, and other conferences\, in 2020\, reflects our continued commitment to increase our engagement with the buyside and promote the independent research industry\, on behalf of all Euro IRP members. \nWe have also arranged for exclusive opportunities for our Euro IRP members to support the conference through marketing and sponsorship packages\, as well as panel speaker slots on one of many panel discussions being held throughout the day. \nMembers wanting to attend the conference can also take advantage of early bird pricing\, extended exclusively for Euro IRP members to 15 January 2020 with 50% ticket discount applied for our fully subscribed Euro IRP members.

SUMMARY:Special Members Meeting and ESG Panel Discussion

SUMMARY:2019 Members Study Report Launch
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to be hosting an event exclusively for our members to launch our 2019 Members’ Study Report\, presented by Steve Kelly\, at The Brand Exchange on Tuesday 29 October. \nThe primary aim of our study is to capture valuable data about the independent research sector and our membership\, highlighting the key questions and issues they face in their business\, to generate valuable trend data.  At this critical time for our industry it has never been more important for us to ask our members for their feedback. \nWe would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members who have taken part in our survey this year and supported us with this important initiative. \nIf you are yet to take part in the survey there is still time – we are keeping our survey open online to give every one of our members the opportunity to contribute to the 2019 survey.  If you require your unique survey link to be resent please contact Sue Westwood immediately for support. \nAs regulators put research pricing under close scrutiny\,  and with the recent publication of the FCA’s Research Pricing Review last month\, we continue to collect evidence to support our genuine concerns on unfair competition\, and the aggressive practices of the investment banks.  Euro IRP remains the recognised voice of the independent research sector by the regulators\, with the FCA publicly attesting their support for a vibrant\, healthy independent research sector.  Our Euro IRP Members Survey is quickly becoming established as a vital source of information\, especially in light of the regulators wanting more “real” data on the market. \nWe have asked Steve Kelly to prepare a full report\, with analysis of the survey findings\, a copy of which will be available in early November to all our Euro IRP members.  Prior to publication\, our members will have access to key findings from the report during this special presentation and Q&A with Steve Kelly.  A sandwich lunch will be served with welcome refreshments from 12.30pm\, to give members the opportunity to arrive early\, to speak with Steve Kelly and the Euro IRP Executive\, as well as networking opportunities with other Euro IRP members.   Our presentation will start at 1.00pm with time for Q&A. \nWe very much look forward to welcoming our members to this event.

SUMMARY:View from the US with Michael Mayhew\, Integrity Research
DESCRIPTION:View from the US with Michael Mayhew\, Integrity Research \n4.15pm – 5:00pm Welcome refreshments and Networking\n5.00pm – 6.30pm View from the US presented by Michael Mayhew\n6.30pm – 7.30pm Members’ Drinks with Guests \nWe are very fortunate to host Michael Mayhew\, Principal of Integrity Research\, as our guest speaker\, at an exclusive members event on Monday 12 November. \nMike is one of the leading experts on the US investment research industry.  In addition to founding Integrity Research in 2003\, Mike is a frequent speaker in both the US and Europe on research industry trends and developments and a prolific author for Integrity Research’s  ResearchWatch publication. \nWith over 30 years’ experience as an investment research professional\, Mike will be sharing his unique insights on the American investment research industry post MiFID II\, how it is affecting the buy-side in the US and the unforeseen consequences for independent research providers. \nAs well as MiFID II\, a strong theme in recent ResearchWatch articles has focused on transparent pricing.  Mike will be sharing unique access to some of the results of Integrity Research’s Pricing Study.  The 2017/2018 Study will reflect the insights of over 150 firms including independent research providers. Yet to be published\, this presentation will provide our members with an exclusive insight into the results of the study. \nTo close\, Mike has asked to speak to our members about Alternative Data.  Heightened interest over the past 18 months for alternative data has resulted in unprecedented buy-side attendance at conferences in the US.   Mike will be sharing his thoughts about the alternative data market\, why he believes it is important for all independent research providers to understand the buy-side’s appetite for it\, how they use and value it and how independent research providers can leverage new products and revenues from it. \nWe will be hosting an extended welcome with refreshments from 4.15pm for those members who want to arrive early to speak with Mike Mayhew\, Euro IRP or perhaps to just catch up with other Euro IRP Members.  After the event we will be extending an invitation to join Euro IRP for a drink in the Brand Exchange’s members lounge\, with Mike Mayhew\, Chris Deavin and the Board as well as guests such as Bloomberg\, CSFI\, FTI Consulting and Worldflow\, who have been supporters of our work. \nWe hope this will be an informal\, interactive and above all interesting and engaging discussion group with Mike as he shares his thoughts and insights on the American market. \nSpaces will be limited\, and like our event with Sandy Bragg in 2016\, we are anticipating this event to be very popular with our members.  We ask any members interested in attending this event to email sue.westwood@euroirp.com to secure their place. \nMike Mayhew will be moderating the morning panel “The Research Product – how will it change and what are the consequences?” at the Substantive Research Conference\, on Tuesday 13 November. Chris Deavin\, Chairman Euro IRP\, will take part in this panel discussion representing the views of the association. We very much look forward to seeing our members at our conference stand.  We hope all our members traveling to the UK for the conference\, will be able to join us at this very special member event with Integrity Research the day before.
